The bowls are NOT too big. Neither are the mugs. These are very nicely designed plates. The centers have kind of a krackled muted golden finish with smooth matte blackish edges. The only problem is their price. I got these on sale (Lightning Deal) for about half price, but could only get one set. I'd get another if they come up again in the Gold Box.Very happy with this purchase.
