Have you ever been to an OA meeting? Do you even know what OA is? If so, these dishes are probably not for you.
First of all, the plates are an enormous 12" across. Maybe that's how they make plates these days, but I think even the chargers at the Olive Garden have a smaller diameter than these. Just you try to put a normal dinner on this plate. It looks like a meal from a cartoon- like a Looney Toons giant has baked up a teeny-tiny Tweety Bird in a fantasy borne of hard times and epic privation. These are not plates, they're PLATTERS, and if you think you can fill 'er up like you're at the China Wall AYCE buffet every day and not be morbidly obese in 6 months, you're in for a nasty shock. I use the salad plates as dinner plates. They look more normal. If I put regular portions of protein, veg, and starch on it, it looks like a normal meal. Otherwise it's pretty funny... until you see your butt in a dressing-room mirror.
The bowls are also quite trough-y. With an approximate wingspan of 8" (bigger than my hand), and a depth of about 2", you'd better not use it for ice cream. I put a single serving size of Total cereal in the bowl in the picture. It's a bit ridiculous. If I put in a cup of soup, I'm tipping the dish after a few spoonfuls. The bowls are just too wide and shallow to be good for soup, but I do like them for spaghetti, and for Asian dishes with noodles or rice. It's really more of a "dish" than a "bowl".
The mugs are nice, a good size for coffee, tea, or cocoa, but the color is totally off. You can see how the color varies from dish to dish. Now, I did expect that, since celadon is a notoriously varied, multi-colored glaze. There are hues of green, brown, blue and purple and that's what makes it such a stunner. However, the mugs just end up sort of minty sea-foam green, and it's pretty uninspiring. The mugs are a good shape, and quite nice to hold.
The variations in colors is worth mentioning, because they all look pretty standard in the company photo. If you look at my pics you'll see there's really a big difference. This might really bother someone who has a need for order and wants a set because, well, it's a set. These won't all look the same. You've been warned.
There's a black painted stamp on the bottom of each piece, which reads something like "Heritage Collection, Made in China", but I scrubbed it off with one of those green scrubbies.
I will note the Queen Anne's Lace pattern is pretty darn breathtaking and I get complimented on these dishes often, mostly because I use the plates as serving platters when I go to potlucks and things. They get out. Another thing worth mentioning is I actually wanted stoneware because it's supposed to be oven-microwave-dishwasher-freezer safe. These are only microwave and dishwasher safe. It said so on that stamp I rubbed out. Grumble.
These plates are pretty, but way over-priced. They are way too big for most people to safely use. I don't mean to sound disparaging but there's hard evidence that people eat more when served more, and it's virtually impossible to "eyeball" a normal portion when you're subconsciously trying to fill up a huge plate. I definitely ended up with some mysterious fluff that I had to work off, and I actually had to get a scale and start measuring my foods - my sense of proportion was wayyy off after a few weeks with these beasts. If I had it to do over again, these would stay on the shelves and I'd be doing a lot less work on the stair machine.
